A little shameless self-promotion: The Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD), the kind folks who sent me to New Orleans last year, have lost their minds again and hired me to blog my hard and soft impressions of using Robert Marzano’s latest, The Art and Science of Teaching, in my classroom for the next few months. First post’s up today.
Go, read, comment. Dr. Marzano’s writing there too. (The ASCD people call him “Bob,” but I can’t bring myself to do that just yet. Maybe in May.)

Just back from your ASCD post and looking forward to the rest. Per your comment there:
“… about half the time here, I’ll be writing about my failures. I’ve learned, over the years of talking to and writing for teachers, that we actually learn more from honesty about our struggles than from anything else. This is scary, frankly,…”
Also read this morning this post from Stanford professor Bob Sutton summarizing his interview with Pixar’s Brad Bird:
“…Bird described how he urged his team that they would learn the most and do the best work if they showed their work to each other, critiqued it, and improved it — ‘Everyone will get humiliated and encouraged together.’” (posted at http://bobsutton.typepad.com/my_weblog/2009/01/everyone-will-get-humiliated-and-encouraged-together.html).
Just feeling the synchronicity and the value and truth of the sentiment.
Thanks!

I have to admit I’m opposed to Marzano in nearly every way in terms of both philosophy and methodology. At the same time I agree with nearly all of his recommendations.I have been trying to adopt his assessment system this year. It’s been a bit of a struggle since I’m working alone at my school on this but it’s been fun. I had used my own standards-based system but I switched to his (we disagree on minor details) with the hopes that having his backing and a book, my district would be more willing to listen to my ranting and get everyone to start switching over.

Give some instructional specialists a video camera, an indoor pool, and ka-pow Marzano magic!
